Quality of Life

Unparalled Anywhere.

Montgomery offers the best of all worlds - a bucolic setting and a central location accessible to all that New York City and Philadelphia have to offer. Local amenities, infrastructure, and resources provide Montgomery businesses and residents with convenience and enjoyment of the highest quality of living, including:

Education is highly valued in Montgomery.

A public school system among the top-rated in New Jersey draws many residents to Montgomery. There are also a number of top-notch private schools nearby including the Lawrenceville School, Princeton Day School, the Hun School and Stuart Country Day School.

We have a number of college campuses nearby. Montgomery is 15 minutes north of Princeton University and a half-hour from Rutgers University and The College of New Jersey (TCNJ), plus two leading community college campuses, Raritan Valley and Mercer, are nearby and offer fantastic career-enhancing learning opportunities in STEM fields.  Adults can audit Princeton University courses or enjoy Princeton Adult School classes.

Places to gather, shop, eat and play.

There are two growing retail areas along the Route 206 corridor with shops, restaurants, plazas and housing interspersed. This provides every convenience expected in a modern, sophisticated suburban setting. Our community offers charming and diverse experiences that cater to both residents and visitors.

Montgomery Place and Montgomery Grove on the north side of town feature a variety of stores, including grocery options, dining establishments, specialty shops and ample parking.

The Montgomery Promenade, a regional shopping and entertainment development anchored by Whole Foods, is under construction near the airport and southern border of town. This center will feature a mix of retail stores, five trend-setting restaurants and a one-acre outdoor community space for public events, making it a vibrant hub for social gatherings.

The new Village Shoppes and the Montgomery Shopping Center and Princeton North complete our southern commercial hub along Route 206 near Route 518. These locations offer a range of retail options and are just a short drive from Princeton.

Our retail and restaurant scene is continually expanding and enhances our quality of life by offering convenience, variety and a sense of community.

Montgomery Parks and Rec offers fun, healthy activities.

While experiencing growth as a community, Montgomery Township carefully planned this growth and has preserved over one-third of its landbase. The township is known for its expansive parks system with many passive and active recreation opportunities, including a vast trails network, sports fields, playgrounds and pavilions, and many recreational classes and events. The Montgomery community center and senior center is a hub of classes and activities for everyone from our active senior population to the smallest child. There are three private golf courses in town. Biking is popular in the adjoining Sourland Mountain. Somerset County also maintains parkland in Montgomery, and Princeton and Mercer County parks lie just to our south.

Nationally-ranked hospitals and doctors.

Montgomery has two hospitals 20 minutes away - Penn Medicine Princeton Health is located to its south in Plainsboro, and Robert Wood Johnson Somerset to its north in Somerville. There are a large number of medical and dental practices located in Montgomery, such as Princeton Orthopaedic Associations, which is opening a new surgery center in 2025.

Access to major transportation hubs.

Montgomery township is transected by a state highway 206, which connects to the Route 1 corridor to the south and to Route 287 to the north, giving access to both Philadelphia and New York City and all metropolitan airports. New Jersey Transit bus lines run through town and we are also close to stops on the Northeast Corridor of New Jersey Transit and Amtrak, offering speedy passenger train service into the above cities, as well as Boston and Washington D.C. CSX freight rail transects our town. Montgomery also has an airport with small jet and helicopter service.

Our growing art, culture, and tourism scenes.

Montgomery Township and our non-profit partners host many cultural and community events each year. Our town boasts a newly-built state-of-the art county library branch with incredible amenities, programs, and learning opportunities. The township celebrates its resident artists with gallery displays in its two-year old municipal center lobby.

Montgomery's Revolutionary War history is celebrated by a 27-mile national scenic byway along the Millstone River and by its historical society. We have many stately historic landmark homes. We are home to the Dirck Gulick House (circa 1752) and many great community gatherings are held at the Stoutsburg Sourland African American museum located in the former AME Zion Church. The township's rural flavor can be sampled at its a farmers market and its working farms are well-known among the Central Jersey agritourist and foodies culture. The neighboring town of Princeton and Princeton University are also steeped in history and offer great art and cultural opportunities, including the Princeton Art Museum.
